Sibsagar is one of the farthest districts of Assam. Surrounded by the districts of Jorhat and Dibrugarh and sharing the borders with states of Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh, is around 360 kms from Guwahati.
Description:
Sibsagar has played an important role in the history of Assam and the whole of North east. It was once the capital of the Ahom tribes which came from the far eastern parts and took control of this part of India, thus settling here permanently. They ruled Assam for more tan 600 years till the British came and took over. It has many monuments telling the stories of the glorious past that it witnessed.
Sibsagar is also a big trading town for oil and tea.

Sightseeing:: Sibsagar has many palaces and tanks built during the time of the Ahom rulers. The Kareng, the Talatal and the Rang Ghar are the palaces built by the Ahom rulers of various periods. The complexes of these palaces have many natural and artificial tanks built by the queens for various purposes.
Rising from the south is the massive plain 32-metre-high Shivadol
which is the tallest Shiva temple in India. This temple is surrounded by many
other temples of Durga and Vishnu.
There is also a small museum called the Tai Ahom Museum which has many artifacts on display.
Namdang Stone Bridge built over the river Namdang is cut out from a single solid rock in 1703 and is still in working condition.
