Panna finds a mention in the Vedic scriptures of the Hindu religion in the name of Padmawatipuri. In the medieval stages Panna had various dynasties ruling it like the Maurya, Shunga and the Gupta dynasties. From the 10th century the Chandela and the Bundela dynasties ruled the place, and the area came to be known as Bundelkhand.
There are many places of interest in and around Panna. The Panna national Tiger Sanctuary and the diamond mines are the prime attractions of this place. There are as many as 300 temples in Panna with a fine blend of Mughal and Hindu architecture, dedicated to various Gods.
