Description:
Kota located in the southern parts of Rajasthan was the erstwhile capital of the state of Bundi. Around 35 kms from Bundi and about 245 kms from the state capital Jaipur, Kota is situated on the banks of the River Chambal in the Malwa region of Rajasthan. It is supposed to be the most important industrial center of the state of Rajasthan. The history of the city of Kota goes along with the history of the neighbourhood princely state of Bundi. During the 12th century, the Chauhans established the state of Bundi and ruled from there. Later the nearby Kota was given to the eldest son of the ruler of Bundi to look after. It was only in the 17th century that the Mughal emperor separated the state of Kota from Bundi and gave the state independent power. The first ruler to ascend the throne of Kota was Rao Madho Singh. Since then Kota has become the bastion of Rajput gallantry and power.
The places that can be visited in and around Kota are many. The forts and the palaces built by the rulers of this small independent state still retain their legacy and grandeur. The city fort and palace, located on the eastern banks of the Chambal River, is the main attraction of Kota. The complex is one of the largest to be found in the state of Rajasthan. The fort built in the 17th century also houses the museum inside which is a must visit.
The beautiful small lake known as the Kishore Sagar tank, built in 1346, near the palace is also a must visit. The attraction of this tank is the small Jagmandir palace perched on the island of this tank, built by one of the rulers in the 18th century. The Brij Vilas Palace Museum, adjacent to the tank is also an important site to visit.
Kota has many gardens big and small those can be visited. The Chambal Gardens and the Chhattar Bilas Gardens are the important ones among the others.
The town of Bundi also may be visited from Kota, which was once the governing body of Kota. Kota today is famous as the industrial center of Rajasthan and also for its beautiful Kota Saris.
