Onam is the most important of all the festivals for the people of Kerala. This is a ten day long festivity full of feasts, boat races, decorations and dances. Basically a harvest festival after the rains, Onam has a beautiful legend behind it. Kerala was ruled by the king called Mahabali. He loved his subjects very much would always think for the betterment of them. He was equally loved by his subjects who were devoted to their king. Soon he became so powerful and loved by the subjects that the Gods started fearing that the people would forget them. Hence they approached Vishnu. Vishnu took a form of young Brahmin seeking alms. He approached the king who would never refuse a needy. Vishnu asked for three paces of land which the king agreed. Suddenly the small Brahmin became huge in size. His first foot took over the earth; the second took the heavens and then as he asked where he could put his third pace, the king immediately put forth his head. Before dying, he asked for one boon, which was readily granted by the Lord. The king Mahabali would come once in a year to meet his subjects and see that all's well. Onam is the time when the king comes to see the well being of his subjects.
Therefore the people of Kerala, decorate their houses, make beautiful designs of flowers in their gardens, prepare delicious food and dance throughout the day, to welcome their king.
The main attraction is the traditional dresses and the dances with the beautiful decoration of flowers and the racing of the unique snake boats. The complete vegetarian fare is also not to be missed.
Onam celebrations start from 5th September 2005 to the 15th September 2005.
